Cause
Generalized spacing, a single midline gap and space from a missing tooth require different diagnostic questions.
Spaces may reflect tooth position, tooth size, missing teeth, gum changes, habits or the way upper and lower teeth meet. Closing the visible gap without identifying the cause can produce an unstable result.
Invisalign can close many orthodontic spaces, redistribute space for restorative dentistry or coordinate tooth positions around missing teeth. In other situations, bonding, veneers, implants, periodontal care or a combined plan may create a more proportionate and stable result.
Ask whether the objective is complete closure, space redistribution or combined cosmetic-restorative treatment. Confirm how tooth size and final contact points affect the result and retention.
Generalized spacing, a single midline gap and space from a missing tooth require different diagnostic questions.
Closing all spaces orthodontically may not create ideal tooth proportions when teeth are small or unusually shaped.
Spaces can reopen, especially when the original cause remains. Retainer design and wear are central to stability.
The Wonder stage is about noticing, not diagnosing. Crowding, spacing, bite changes, tooth wear, difficulty cleaning, or relapse after past treatment can justify an assessment. In children, timing matters because tooth eruption and jaw growth change what can be observed and when treatment may be useful.
A midline space associated with gum attachment, a missing tooth or active periodontal disease is not the same clinical problem as small generalized spacing. The same clear tray cannot be assumed to solve each cause.
Often, yes. The clinician still needs to evaluate tooth size, bite, gum attachment, root position and the reason the gap developed.
Possibly. Some plans intentionally position teeth first and use bonding afterward to improve shape or proportion.
Potential causes include tooth movement, gum or bone changes, habits, missing contacts or retainer failure. New spacing should be examined rather than assumed cosmetic.
