Digital scans for Invisalign treatment

A digital intraoral scanner creates a three-dimensional surface model of the teeth and bite. It replaces many traditional impressions, but it does not replace diagnosis.

The plain answer

A scan is a record, not a treatment recommendation.

The model can measure crowding and spacing, support aligner manufacturing, show planned movements and help compare progress. It can also improve patient understanding because tooth positions are visible from angles that are difficult to see in a mirror.

Ask why the scan is being taken, whether existing records are sufficient, how the bite was captured and how the clinician will use the model to approve or modify the proposed tooth movements.

What matters

Three things to evaluate before acting

Surface accuracy

Digital scans record visible tooth and gum surfaces in detail and can be repeated for progress comparison.

Bite capture

The relationship between upper and lower scans must be recorded accurately because an incorrect bite can distort planning.

Diagnostic limits

Root, bone and disease assessment require clinical examination and, when indicated, other imaging or tests.

Where this fits

Understand records, treatment planning, cost and logistics.

The Prepare stage turns interest into a plan. A meaningful consultation should connect the clinical exam, photographs, digital scans and any necessary radiographs to a written treatment recommendation. It should also explain responsibilities, monitoring, refinements, retention, insurance and what happens if the original plan changes.

The scanner does not show bone levels, root shape, cavities between teeth, active gum disease or every jaw and joint consideration. Examination, photographs and indicated radiographs provide different information.

Questions people ask

Useful answers before a consultation

Are digital scans more comfortable than impressions?

Many patients prefer scanning because it avoids trays of impression material, although scan time and technique vary.

Can a scan detect cavities?

A scanner may show visible surface features, but it is not a substitute for a complete dental examination and appropriate radiographs.

Does Blue Bird Dental use digital scanning?

Its current public Invisalign process states that treatment begins with a consultation and three-dimensional digital scan.
